Sunday July 16 - Rock Night

picture of Patrick Rondat

Part one (no slideshow available)
Patrick Rondat Quartet

Patrick Rondat who hails from France is a guitarist whose reputation goes well beyond his country’s borders. His ‘Rape of the Earth’ and ‘Amphibia’ albums are well known and his last opus ‘An Ephemeral World’ has already enjoyed significant success. His virtuosity brings to mind the likes of Al di Meola whilst his musical influences are far from limited to the world of Rock. His talent earned him a long term collaboration with King of French Electro music, Jean-Michel Jarre, which allowed him to play all over the World in larger-than-life musical extravaganzas. One of his crowning moments was to play a hard rock cover version of Vivaldi’s ‘Summer’ (from the Four Seasons) at the foot of the Eiffel tower in front of 2 million Parisians. He has also collaborated on albums with Michel Petrucciani and Didier Lockwood and in 1998 he played on the European leg of the G3 tour, invited by Joe Satriani.
Accompanied by: Patrice Guers (bass), Manu Martin (keyboards), Dirk Buinenber (drums)

Super Colossal Tour
starring
Joe Satriani

Referred to by his legions of fans as « Satch », Joe Satriani become world famous in 1987 when his second album “Surfing with the Alien” saw the light of day and went on to sell over one million copies. His ‘alien’ sounds brought some much needed freshness to the Rock scene and was quickly embraced by rock fans and guitar enthusiasts alike. World Tours then succeeded one another alongside artists such as Mick Jagger, Deep Purple and of course G3 where he teamed up with his former pupil Steve Vai. Joe now has an impressive 12 album releases and 7 million album sales under his belt, whilst his latest release ‘Super Colossal’ is already a best-seller. His status as premier guitar hero is paradoxically due to the fact that he is not simply a guitar hero but a creator of new sounds, forever pushing back the frontiers of his musical universe, frequently leading his fans into unchartered territory. For this guitar extraterrestrial, the starry skies above Patrimonio are undoubtedly the most fitting backdrop to his musical antics.

Accompanied by : Dave Larue (bass), Galen Henson (guitar), Jeff Campitelli (drums).

Monday July 17 - Jazz/Funky night

picture of Ron Carter

Part one:

Ron Carter Trio :

Russell Malone (guitar), Mulgrew Miller (piano), Ron Carter(double bass)

From the age of 10, Ron Carter studied the cello and gave his first chamber music concerts before finally settling on the double bass and the world of jazz. Some of his most notable collaborations have been alongside jazz greats such as Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock and Tony Williams. Ron Carters’ key innovation has been to liberate the double bass from its purely accompanying role. He’s one of jazz’s living legends and it is truly an honour to have him at the festival this year. Mulgrew Miller on the piano also plays in the jazz premier division and was for a long time part of the Tony William Quintet. This superb trio is completed by the excellent guitarist, Russell Malone, whose mastery of swing has seen him play alongside Harry Connyck Jr and Diane Krall.

Part two:

Maceo Parker

The hugely talented saxophonist Maceo Parker is one of the pioneers and founders of funk initially forging his musical career under James Brown (who put the spotlight on him with his song « Come on Maceo, Blow your horn »), prior to joining forces with P-Funk alongside George Clinton and Bootsy Collins. His unique blend of jazz, R’n’B and Funk has seen him become a reference on the Groove scene. When this gentleman hits the stage, he sets it alight with his energy and usually delivers around a three hour show with a serious amount of dancing thrown in for good measure. His live track record proves that audiences can never get enough of this man and Patrimonio will be sure to follow suit.

Tuesday July 18 - Blues & Rock night

picture of Bjorn Berge

Part one:

Bjørn Berge

Looking more like a musician from a hardcore metal band, this 36 year old Norwegian plays some seriously whacky, funky blues. Bjørn Berge is truly majestic on stage with his slide guitar, his powerful voice and thundering foot playing an imaginary kick drum! His music clearly owes much to the blues from the Delta although he is also capable of pulling off some highly original cover versions of relatively recent songs such as “Give it away” from the Red Hot Chilli Peppers or “Keep it greasy” from the much missed Frank Zappa. Critics quickly gave his style a new brand name: Delta Funk. It fits well with a music which is undeniably modern but stays true to its roots. It’s unfair but there are some artists who are capable of appropriating an entire stage to themselves. Bjorn Berge is one of those artists and he alone deserves a trip to Patrimonio this year

picture of Robert Plant

Part two:

Robert Plant

Who doesn’t know Robert Plant, the former frontman of the mighty Led Zeppelin? Presumably only those not remotely interested in popular music of the last 35 years. Spotted by guitarist Jimmy Page in 1969 who was looking for a vocalist for his band, Robert’s voice and charisma not only ensured that Led Zep conquered the popular music scene until it disbanded in 1980 but ensured that the band continues to be regarded with reverence by young and old alike whilst current record sales continue to climb, recently reaching a giddy 300 million worldwide. Robert Plant launched his solo career in 1982 even teaming up with his former sparring partner Jimmy Page in 1993, first in the studio and then on a long World tour. In 1997, Robert took a break from the limelight and only reappeared in 2002 with a covers album entitled “Dreamland”. But it’s really in 2005 that he made his comeback with an album of diverse and original compositions flirting with the world of rock, heavy rock, folk, blues and even oriental music, still enrapturing the listener with his enchanting voice.

Wednesday July 19 - Brazilian night

picture of Hamilton de Holanda

Part one:

Hamilton de Holanda Quintet

A total genius on his instrument, Hamilton de Holanda is the worthy descendent of the great Brazilian mandolinists. He revolutionized the manner of playing this emblematic instrument of the choro, the bandolim, on which he added a double string (going from 8 to 10 strings) and developed an extremely rich polyphonic sound. His virtuosity and rich sonic pallet soon saw him wearing the accolade of best bandolim player of all time, a status this young Brazilian (only 29 years old) reinforces every time he switches with total ease between classic choro masterpieces to jazzier numbers during his feverish concerts. A gem of inventiveness and charisma, this young man is a ‘must see’ within the magical grounds of the Patrimonio Guitar Nights.

picture of Gilberto Gil

Part two:

Gilberto Gil

This world famous musician from the Bahia province in Brasil needs little introduction. For those from another planet it might have to be explained that Gilbero Gil was initially a product of the then new musical style in Brasil, the bossa nova, which gave him his inspiration and style. His colourful and eventful past meant that he crossed paths with many diverse musicians such as Joao Gilberto or Chico Buarque before collaborating with Jimmy Cliff and the Wailers. Lead representative of Brasilian music and standard bearer for his country’s culture, he began writing political texts for his songs prior to entering the political arena and later becoming the Brazilian Minister for Culture in 2003. It is therefore an illustrious presence, in more ways than one, that will be gracing the festival in Patrimonio this year.

Thursday July 20 - Night of Blues

picture of J-J Milteau

Part one:

Jean-Jacques Milteau Quintet

+ invitée Demi Evans

Jean-Jaques Milteau embodies refinement, be it on instrumental blues, more country style numbers or even jazzier pieces. He also knows how to let rip on upbeat boogie-woogie. But a Milteau concert in not only a superb stage performance but also a trip into the musical history of southern United States. His diverse playing styles and wide spectrum of emotion make this French musician a revered and respected artist around the World.
Demi Evans, former model from the Dallas ghettoes, is his special guest. She brings to his music a powerful and expressive voice with a distinctive blues-soul vibe to it as well as her gripping stage presence, no doubt honed during her podium strutting days. For sure, this black beauty will not leave you indifferent...

picture of John Butler

Part two:

John Butler Trio

This still relatively unknown (except in his native Australia) white, Rastafarian guitarist is clearly on the verge of making the big time such is his World class talent. He is reminiscent of Ben Harper and Bjorn Berge and has a truly outstanding and personal playing style, mixing up blues with a dash of hip hop, a sprinkling of reggae here and a pinch of funk there, all wrapped up in unique guitar sounds. Such an array of tantalizing ingredients gives a raw and authentic feel to his songs. His soloing is also truly impressive (check out “Treat your mama”, or “Company Sin” or “Old man”) and is dished out in generous helpings.
You would do well to come and get up close to this artist at the forefront of the ‘happening’ music scene whilst he remains accessible.

picture of Renaud Garcia-Fons

Part one (no slideshow available) :

Renaud Garcia-Fons

"TRIO ARCOLUZ"

The double-bassist Renaud Garcia-Fons is unanimously acknowledged as being the ultimate virtuoso of this instrument which he explores to an extent not thought possible until he came on the scene. He generally uses a bow unless he’s plucking the strings in true guitar style. This impressive technique provides genuine added value to his music as he makes us travel effortlessly from classical to oriental worlds. Each of his albums constitutes a charming adventure. His accompanying musicians are also first class: Antonio Ruiz, alias “Kiko”, is a young flamenco guitarist, heavily focused on rhythm with solos in perfect partnership with the double-bass. Keyvan Chemirani is a specialist in oriental percussion who manages to weave fascinating relationships with the other instruments. In short, not to be missed!

picture of Vincente Amigo

Part two:

Vicente Amigo

Vincente Amigo is widely regarded as being one of the most brilliant flamenco guitarists of his generation hence his numerous collaborations with the likes of Milton Nascimento, Al Di Meola, John McLaughlin and Paco de Lucia. Along with Paco he is certainly one of the most creative flamenco guitarists, forever pushing back the boundaries of the genre. On stage, the emotion he radiates is tangible, his compositions either floating delicately around the audience or cutting through the air with wild fret board flurries. His last album entitled ‘Un Momento en el sonido” constitutes a sublime fusion of jazz-flamenco and is sure to be a real delight to be shared with the audience in Patrimonio which has already been emphatically conquered three times in the past by this man. Indeed, Vincente is just one of those artists who have been seduced by the charms of Patrimonio and he returns with unmitigated enthusiasm every time.

Saturday July 22 - Latin night

picture of Katia Guerreiro

Part one:

Katia Guerreiro (Fado)

Put down by certain Portuguese influential intellectuals - who considered it to be ‘music of the previous regime’ - fado had almost disappeared from the musical score sheet. Happily, it is making a healthy come back largely thanks to support from the younger generations. One of the flag bearers of this revival is Katia Guerreiro who enjoys a privileged place in the hearts of the Portuguese, many believing that she is the new Amalia Rodriguez. Like Amalia, she has a real complicity with her musicians as well as similar stage sobriety allowing her voice to do the talking, as it were. She has a beautiful, warm, rich, Latin voice capable of expressing heartfelt cries or gentle emotion, always with a sincerity and dignity worthy of the great fado singers.

picture of Agnès Jaoui

Part two:

Agnès Jaoui "Canta"

Few people know that before becoming a top draw actress, script writer and film Director, Agnès Jaoui was a singer, an activity she had had to reluctantly shelve due to her success as an actress. In reality, she never really did stop singing, at least in private, with a special preference for songs from South America which she masters in the original texts. Now that she has come out of the dark over this largely hidden talent of hers, we only now realise what a void she is filling, namely a beautiful voice, able to sing beautiful songs with emotion and simplicity. Her warm voice plunges us into a tender and exotic universe. Supported by her Cuban and Argentinean musicians, she takes us on a trip to Portugal, Argentina, Brasil and Cuba. Certain songs, such as ‘Lo Dudo’ are full of poignant beauty, or full of goose-pimply nostalgia such as “Historia de un Amor”. Other songs will simply make you want to get up and dance.

Sunday July 23 - Gypsy night

picture of Joscho Stephan

Part one:

Joscho Stephan Trio

This master of virtuosity comes from Germany. He takes his themes from Django, Duke Ellington or George Gershwin as do so many others. But there stops the similarity, for what he does with them needs to be heard to be believed. His rich and contrasted manner of playing has his fingers run all over the fretboard in a series of chords that a "normal" guitarist could not even dream of. As with any gypsy-style musician the dreamy nostalgic passages often lead to flamboyant improvisations but with Joscho the accelerations are absolutely dizzying and full of breathtaking harmonic and rhythmic combinations. What is also remarkable about him is that the diabolical speed he sometimes reaches never spoils the quality of his sound, and his notes always remain clear and expressive even throughout the fastest streaks. The rhythm is masterfully maintained by his father Günter Stephan (2nd guitar) and his lifelong accomplice Max Schaaf (double bass).

picture of Tchavolo Schmitt

Part two:

Tchavolo Schmitt  Quartet

Tchavolo is undoubtedly one of the most authentic and charismatic representatives of "manouche" music. The matchless vigour with which he attacks the strings of his guitar is astounding. His red-hot swing, his whirling waltzes and the emotion that comes out of every note, especially in the ballads, resemble his character. He's an endearing man with a free spirit, as free as his fingers on the fretboard. No recording can ever really capture the fervour of his playing. You have to experience the ardour of a concert in one of those manouche encounters that defy description, when Tchavolo is there among his fellow gypsies, with no frills or artifice. Then, at any moment, everyone - including the public - can be carried away. Tchavolo will be surrounding himself with Mayo Hubert (rhythm guitar), Claudius Dupont (double bass) and the Rumenian virtuoso Costel Nitescu, one of the two greatest Gypsy-style violinists (the other being Florin Niculescu). Flights of lyricism, dazzling attacks, restrained emotions, swing: he has everything to delight the most demanding ears.

our guests (no slideshow available) :

picture of David Reinhardt

David Reinhardt

David is Django's grandson and his father was the late and regretted Babik Reinhardt whose swing, delicacy and sense of harmony he has inherited, along with his flawless technique. No wonder he is often invited by all the great European jazz stages.

picture of Dorado Schmitt

Dorado Schmitt

Dorado, like Tchavolo, he is one of the giants of the gypsy guitar world. His playing is enthusiastic, colourful and delicate. A very creative musician, he has enriched the manouche music with some moving and poetical compositions. These pieces like La Bossa Dorado have become classics and are now part of the repertoire of all gypsy-style guitarists. He is also a very good violinist and a singer with an expressive, captivating voice. Official Website

picture of Marcel Loeffler

Marcel Loeffler

His past unrehearsed encounters with the other musicians allows us to expect some captivating and unforgettable moments.
