Part one: Tommy Emmanuel

Tommy EmmanuelThe word ‘solo’ becomes rather meaningless here because when Tommy Emmanuel gets a guitar in his hands it sounds like there are about a dozen other Tommy Emmanuel’s playing alongside him in secret. What this musician does with a guitar needs to be seen (or heard) to be believed. When he played in Nashville for the first time, Chet Atkins exclaimed that Tommy was one of the best guitarists on the planet, while Acoustic Guitar Magazine added, “He is not just a great guitarist, he’s a great artist”. Indeed, he doesn’t just play the guitar, he has created new lands for the guitar to venture in and he displays his skill, vision and virtuosity with such lightheartedness, ease and humility that you can forgive this man for having been attributed much more than his fair share of talent. Since his performance at the Sydney Olympic Games (in front of 2.7 billion spectators) Tommy has seen himself get two Grammy awards and countless ‘gold’ record sale certifications meaning that he is currently the most sought after guitarist in the world. For the last twenty years, Tommy Emmanuel had been touring incessantly, even putting his own health on the line in the process. Consequently his live apparitions have become more remote and it is thus truly a privilege to have him back to Patrimonio for a second time. Prepare to be uplifted by this generous musician who makes it all look far too easy.

Part two: John Butler Trio

John ButlerIt was only during his 2006 World tour that John Butler, already a household name in his native Australia, became established on the World scene - particularly in Europe where he was little known. That year, the European public had the pleasure of discovering one of the World’s most talented young artists who has since met with global success. This white Rasta has a unique style bringing in all sorts of different musical styles into the overall mix of his music: a slice of blues with a sprinkling of hip hop and a zest of reggae and a dollop of funk, all carefully cooked by his wonderfully weird sounding electrified acoustic guitars that look as if they had belonged to his great grandfather. His guitar soloing prowess is something to behold and all guitar lovers will get something special out of this performance. The 2008 version of the Trio is stronger than ever in terms of the diversity of moods and atmosphere they can generate, from the laid back reggae of Better than to the irresistible funk of Used to get high, not forgetting the ethereal solos of Losing you. If the performance of 2008 is anything like the quality of what we saw in 2006, then we are in for a real treat.

On stage: John Butler (guitare), Shannon Birchall (basse), Michael Barker (batterie).
