Part one: Biréli Lagrène Solo
"He must be amongst the World’s top three guitarists” once declared John McLaughlin. With Birelli Lagrene one finds an enviable combination of extraordinary technique, a deep and wide musical culture - which he willingly draws upon - as well as exceptional levels of inspiration, meaning that you never quite know where he’s going to take you next. The list of European and American jazzmen he has accompanied is really quite impressive (including Jaco Pastorius) and he is clearly comfortable playing a wide variety of styles. Unequalled when performing in the gypsy style of his origins he is also difficult to match when playing bop, making him a real Charlie Parker of the guitar World. He has also been seen playing a piece of Paganini that is notorious for being unplayable on the guitar! According to his close musician friends, Birelli is not entirely human…

Part two: Larry Carlton / Robben Ford
For guitarists who favour music which sits on the crossroads of jazz-rock-pop, Larry Carlton is their God and his discography their bible. His mastering of all musical genres means that he has worked with very different musicians, from John Lennon to Joni Mitchell to Steve Lukather. But there is also the ‘Larry Carlton sound’, easily recognisable and often found in film scores. However, this sound has recently undergone a type of mutation and the previously discrete influence of blues in his work has now bubbled over into a full out and passionate blues approach. And for those who may be concerned by this change affecting his notoriously beautiful harmonies, please rest assured: it’s real blues and its real Carlton and that’s the magic. An unforgettable night in the offing for those fans who will discover this hidden facet of their hero.

After having played with Bob Dylan, Charlie Haden, David Sanborn, Robben Ford became Miles Davis’ guitarist, a confirmation of ‘making it’ if ever there was one for a young strummer. With his talents as a composer, improviser and singer, he creates music which is at once powerful, accessible and makes you want to get up and dance. He navigates with such absolute ease between rhythm and blues, rock, pop and funk that one would believe that he’s a specialist of each. Monotony is not in Ford’s vocabulary and with two guitarists of such standard the show is likely to make a lasting impact on the audience.
